Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan says after reviewing video showing six of his officers punching and kicking a 42-year-old man during a traffic stop, he's taking the incident very seriously.
The video shows officers punching and kicking Derryl Jenkins during an arrest in Minneapolis in February.
Dolan says he'll request for the FBI to be involved in the investigation into Jenkins' police brutality claim.
"Some of the actions of responding officers, specifically the kicking of the suspect, give me concern; because of this, I am asking for an outside review by the FBI. Additionally, the incident has been referred to my Internal Affairs and Training Units for a review of our arrest procedures in dealing with suspects resisting arrest," Dolan said in a press release.
Jenkins says he had a late-night dinner and three beers at Rudolph's Bar-B-Que and was headed to a friend's house when he was stopped for allegedly speeding on Feb. 19. He says he was cooperative with the officer after being pulled over for speeding.
But the video shows Jenkins and the officer scuffling when he gets out of the car, and then several officers are called-in for backup.
According to court records, Jenkins was told not to get out of the car. He says he woke up in the hospital with the left side of his face bloodied, while one of the officers suffered a split lip.
Jenkins' attorney says they'll likely use this video to file a civil lawsuit against police.
"There's still a long way to go, but I am pleased police initiated steps recognizing a problem," Jenkins attorney told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS over the phone.
According to police reports, Jenkins resisted arrest. But Jenkins says the video shows he was the victim of an unprovoked attack.
Jenkins was charged with assault and refusing to submit to alcohol tests, but those charges have been dropped
