Residents Protest Unarmed Man's ShootingPOSTED: 6:13 am EDT May 13, 2009
ATLANTA -- Some Atlanta residents expressed outrage over the shooting of an unarmed man by an off-duty police officer.
Activists held a vigil Tuesday night for Tremaine Miller, who is recovering at Grady Hospital with a bullet lodged in his face.
Miller was in his car outside the City View Apartments last week, when the police officer shot him.
According to investigators, the officer thought Miller was reaching for a weapon. But the police report said Miller didn't have a gun.
"That's the first thing he wrote out, ‘I didn't do anything.’ So, I know he was raised to help his family and help his fellow man" said Gregory Rollins, Miller’s father.
"I acknowledge and sympathize with the family members as they deal wth this difficult situation," Atlanta police chief Richard Pennington said in a statement.
Pennington also said the investigation is ongoing and will be unbiased.
